Hi everybody,
I will be researching the issue of challenging authority in cyberspace. Remember my presentation about the Romanian newsgroup that oozed conflict every week? :o) Well, much of that conflict dealt with authority/control issues. There was an entire war between the moderator of the group and a "challenger" who received support from several "high-ranking" group members. The challenger was eventually kicked out by the moderator who subsequently took a lot of heat for that move from the other members. He wisely toned down his messages and refused to engage in conflicts for a while. Now, his authoritarian tendencies are resurfacing again. So there's plenty of stuff there for me to study. I was wondering whether somebody could point me to some material (articles, books, web sites, etc.) that deals with "challenging authority in the cyberspace" or any variation thereof. I was also considering contacting both the moderator and the challenger and interviewing them, to get their "private" (i.e. not accessible to the other members of the newsgroup) take on the conflict. Another idea was to send everybody on that list a questonnaire about the conflict in question, to get the general mood ("public opinion"?) on this topic. Maybe I can then touch on issues such as involvement/lurking, activism/info gathering-entertainment (maybe Noelle-Neuman's "spiral of silence"?). Any advice will be met with eternal gratitude and a beer at a bar of your choice (except for the ones that foolishly refuse to accept international passports as credible IDs...).
On a related topic, did Wise imply that a breakdown of "control societies" would/might lead to "discipline societies"? Or vice-versa? Or the other way around, on its head, and 12:09 Friday night, alone in the Communication lab and frighteningly verbose?... Hmmmm...

Hi you all. not much activity here the past few days. I am wondering if anyone has any comments about the Wise article with regard to the idea of the society(ies) of control. How might You analyze the Internet (or web sites, listservs, etc) using this theory? How might you look at Blogs through this lens? Hmmm

wow--
I just read both Lauren and Stephs analysis of the connections between the movie and course material and i am impressed. Gold stars for both of you. Now let's hear from others. . . Doesn't matter whether you loved or hated it. I'd like to hear any ideas/comments/opinions.
I'm pooped (tired). That's it for now.
