Social Impact Class blog

I like that--the course could be renamed the social impact of international computer terrorism :} Now we know that Iris is giving away terrorists (see link below!!). Wow--I won't get into the implications of that. . .but could she be an informant for Steph?? Okay, I AM JUST KIDDING. Anyway, one thing that i am noticing is the media's fascination/preoccupation with the idea of surveillance technologies. Almost every day/week there's another article. . . Is this a mirror of our concerns as a nation? Are they concerned about our rights? OR---and my more sinister side thinks this way, is this another way for them to reconfirm their role as watchdog(s) even as they are another mechanism of surveillance. Maybe soon we'll have "reality TV crimes and punishments (aka Running Man, The game, the matrix,)

Okay I am rambling when my real purpose was to once again inform you that I cannot go to the museum on Monday.

Take care,

Leda

Remember the article on biometrics/surveillance? Here's a CNN story very close to that: "Irises, voices give away terrorists." Check out some excerpts:

"We're trying to collect every biometric on every bad guy that we can," said Lt. Col. Kathy De Bolt, deputy director of the Army battle lab at Fort Huachuca, Arizona, where the biometric tools being used were developed.
"Any place we go into -- Iraq or wherever -- we're going to start building a dossier on people of interest to intelligence. Even if they get released, we have face and voice clips. When they come into one of our checkpoints, we can say, 'You're this bad guy from here."'

I am thinking that i will postpone the due date for the lit review to 11/25. Yes, that's a Monday, but since we aren't meeting that week, it'll do. I have a few reasons for potponing the due date, which i will share in class. Of course, you all should feel perfectly free to turn them in early if you'd like!

Please bring discussion questions for class thursday. I'll be collecting them. . .

Thanks for the info on hyperlinks, Raz.

Leda,

The hyperlink command is in the upper right corner of the writing field. There are 5 options there; the first one looks like a globe with a little link (that's the one you want), the second one is "B" for bold type, the third - "I" for italics, then you have "Post" and, finally, "Post & Publish". Just highlight the text that you need to operate like a link, click on the little globe and write the url in the pop-up window.

Hi--

It occurs to me that i still don't know how to do hyperlinks on this thing. . ? I spent some time going through the help functions etc., but i must've missed something. If anyone could pass along the secret, I'd apreciate it.

Thanks

Leda
